Leadership Scorecard

For Project Success

To successfully transform your business when implementing complex technology, you must be able to gracefully manage many facets of project leadership – while keeping an eye on a lot of moving parts.

As a business leader or project sponsor, your role assumes key accountability and requires a holistic view of how you are leading the program. This is essential if you aim to lead the company, inspire your teams, manage your vendors, and succeed in a highly visible and important initiative. The weight of this project can create heavy pressure and overwhelm because, quite directly, the outcome of your work will affect your entire company.

For the best chance at running an efficient project and achieving a desirable outcome, you must also become aware of this central detail: The parameters and logistics of any project are never what solely predicts the final outcome. How you show up and lead during the course of this transformational business technology implementation will greatly impact the final result.

If my years of experience have proved one thing: The individuals forming a team make all the difference in a project’s journey and ultimate outcome. The unique characteristics of each person – along with their experience, perspective, strengths, and gaps – directly impact the course of a project (for better and for worse).

To achieve the ultimate success you envision from your project, there are three pillars necessary to create a proper foundation: Planning; Performance; and Purpose in realizing true benefits.

Understanding your personal strengths and gaps will guide you with the vital data you need to make more informed decisions. What you uncover in the self-assessment below can positively shift the way you show up tomorrow, throughout the rest of your project’s journey, all the way until project completion and beyond.

This scorecard is a great way to gain clarity on your position within these 3 key pillars of project implementation. For each section, answer the question with a YES or NO. Be honest with yourself. Add up the number of times you chose YES in each section to get your score in each section. Then check your Score Results to find out what it might mean for you. Taking time to do a reality check will give you massive insights to lead a victory in times of transformation.

PLANNING:

IF YOU HAD A YES SCORE OF 1-3, you are probably finding it difficult to set aside time from your day-to-day work and responsibilities to get the clarity and focus needed for this program. You may also be feeling frustrated in aligning the company leadership, program stakeholders, and teams in clearly defining the program’s goals, strategic success criteria, roles & responsibilities and a governance model that works. However, with some targeted focus in these areas, your natural leadership skills and your desire to create positive momentum will become clear to everyone.

IF YOU HAD A YES SCORE OF 4-5, this is better, and you may be aligning various components in leading you, your organization, and your teams to get ready for the program; however, there are still key areas you are struggling with. You may be having issues with getting commitment from key stakeholders, finding the right experienced resources, or engaging with your vendor(s) leadership that brings the confidence you desire. Good news: With some targeted actions, you are close to creating the structures to kick off your program positively with the framework you feel confident will lead to success.

IF YOU HAD A YES SCORE OF 6-7, Kudos to you! You are a leader that is well-qualified and keeps sight of the program activities many other company leaders overlook in their haste to begin executing. As a leader, your strengths, values, and capabilities in getting your company ready is clearly seen by all. You feel confident and are ready and chomping at the bit to get started.

PERFORMANCE:

IF YOU HAD A YES SCORE OF 1-3, you may still be finding it difficult to set aside time from your day-to-day work and responsibilities to get visibly engaged with your vendors and the program leadership to provide impactful insights and necessary direction, especially when challenges constantly arise. You may be finding it harder to “catch up” on the program, attend key meetings, make timely decisions, and ensure the vendor(s) are providing their expertise without driving the program. However, there are better ways for you to engage more effectively with the program, provide the needed leadership, and motivate your teams in ways that raise their desire to succeed.

IF YOU HAD A YES SCORE OF 4-5, you are probably engaging more consistently with your stakeholders, program teams, and vendors; however, there are still times when you fall behind on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, finding it difficult to stay abreast on what’s critical. You may be feeling overwhelmed at times with the complexities on the program and the dynamics of orchestrating vendors, stakeholders, steering committees, resources, quality, timelines, issues, and budgets. You might welcome some additional leadership support, either internally or externally to help provide guidance, support, and even give you some relief so you can be allowed time to focus on what’s necessary.

IF YOU HAD A YES SCORE OF 6-7, Great News! You are showing up as a strong and visible leader, staying engaged, keeping momentum going, and stepping in to effectively guide the program to get back on course, as needed. Your teams are confident of your leadership, feel supported by you cheering them on, solving the big problems, and staying accountable to you. You have solid processes to minimize any circumstances that may be overwhelming to others and are consistent in how you show up which gives others a great sense of optimism.

PURPOSE:

IF YOU HAD A YES SCORE OF 1-3, you are probably feeling frustrated (and perhaps even anxious) about successfully getting to the finish line and achieving the results the company was seeking. You may be losing confidence in yourself and worried about your reputation. You may be concerned that the organization is not ready for the transformation, and there are unknowns that may impact your customers and partners. You and your teams are probably working long hours and now is the time for you to make the right choices and motivate your teams to accomplish what’s needed to be successful. Your leadership skills that you tapped into at the beginning of the program will help everyone maintain positive momentum.

IF YOU HAD A YES SCORE OF 4-5, you are in a better position to realize the benefits of the transformation; however, you are still feeling anxious that portions of the program may not be realized and concerned about customer complaints. You may still be struggling to complete the final phases of the program and are cutting corners to go live. Your desire to achieve success is still there, but you are finding it difficult to muster up the energy to do what’s necessary. Whether its recharging yourself and your teams with a celebration or recognition, looking at problems from a different perspective, or taking personal time, even briefly, injecting something new into where you are at this stage may be what is needed to motivate you and your teams to push a little harder.

IF YOU HAD A YES SCORE OF 6-7, Congratulations! You are using your leadership skills while ensuring the project is staying on track with methods and tools that you established early on and maintained throughout. You are present, approachable and accountable, and are providing value to your teams and to the company. You are the right leader, and you set your sights early on in the program to get ready, start with the end in mind to execute, and deliver true transformation, and your company executives are praising your success.
